CHA provides housing assistance to approximately 640 families each month through the Public Housing and Housing Choice Voucher Programs. The Housing Choice Voucher Program is a federal government program for assisting low-income families, the elderly and the disabled to afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private market. On top of that, CHA is busy trying to serve those in need of housing assistance. About 3,500 people live in Section 8 housing now compared to about half of that in 2000. In order to keep serving that amount, new policies are going into effect on November first. Underwood been on her own since 14 years old and is raising three kids.
